Abstract

Acalypha wilkesiana is folklorically used for treatment of gastrointestinal disorders and inflammatory conditions in Nigeria. The aim of the present study was to isolate and characterize phytoconstituent(s) from the ethyl acetate extract of A. wilkesiana twigs. Ethyl acetate extract was subjected to suction aided column chromatography and eluted with two solvent mixtures of increasing polarity - hexane: ethyl acetate and ethyl acetate: methanol, to isolate phytoconstituents. The structure of the isolated compound was established using 1H-NMR and data on the compound was further verified by comparison with literature reports. A sterol, β-sitosterol was isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of twigs of A. wilkesiana which may be responsible for its medicinal activities. This study recommends further study of the plant in order to isolate more compounds from it. Keywords: β-Sitosterol; Acalypha wilkesiana; ethyl acetate extract.
