Abstract

Petroleum ether extract of Combretum glutinosum stem bark was chromatographed on silica gel column using petroleum ether: ethylacetate (19:1) followed by a gradient of ethylacetate up to 100%, and finally washed with methanol. Similar fractions were pooled together on the basis of their RF values and further purified by preparative thin layer chromatography using petroleum ether: ethylacetate (19:1). This afforded a triterpenoid with dammarane carbon skeleton. 1HNMR and 13CNMR analysis enabled its identification as 3 b- acetoxydammar-21(22)-ene.  Other compounds isolated were 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol and beta amyrin, their  identity were also ascertained using GC/MS comparison with authentic samples.  Keywords: Combretum glutinosum perr. ex. dc., 3b- acetoxydammar-21(22)-ene,  2,4-di-tert-butyl phenol, and beta amyrin.
