ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES AND PHYTOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF FICUS EXASPERATA ROOT EXTRACTS
Abstract
A study on the antimicrobial activities and phytochemical properties of the hexane and ethanolic extracts of the root of Ficus exasperata was carried out. The phytochemical screening was carried out by adopting standard methods. Agar well diffusion method was employed for the antimicrobial screening of the extracts of the root of Ficus exasperata. The phytochemical screening result revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, glycosides and phenols in the hexane and ethanol extracts of Ficus exasperata roots. The antimicrobial activities screening results revealed the ethanol extract of the roots of Ficus exasperata to have greater zone of inhibition in Salmonella typhi(15.3mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (10.5mm),while the hexane extract has greater zone of inhibition in Klebsiella pneumoniae(13.1mm) and Escherichia coli (8.2mm).The activities of the extracts were concentration dependent, with 200mg/ml being the highest concentration for both the hexane and ethanol extracts. The results obtained showed that the root extracts of Ficus exasperata can serve as very useful phytodrugs. Keywords: Saponins, Salmonella typhi, Agar well diffusion,Phytochemical screening,Antimicrobial activities, Ficus exasprataÂDownloads
