Abstract

Zn(II) complexes bearing mixed ligands of Schiff bases (SB) and amino acids (AA): 4-benzylimino- 2,3-dimethyl-1-phenylpyrazal-5-one (L1) and L-lysine (Lys); 4-N-dimethylaminobenzylimino-2,3-dimethyl-1-phenylpyrazal-5-one (L2) and L-asparagine (Asn); benzyliminothiosemicarbarzide (L3) and L-phenylalanine (Phe) were synthesized and characterized using IR, MS, NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The thermal stability of the complexes were determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The molar conductivity measurements of the complexes were also recorded Both the complexes and parent ligands were screened against selected bacteria and fungi for their antimicrobial properties. From spectroscopic data, the SB and AA were bidentates through N, O donor atoms, depicting tetrahedral geometries with Zn(II) ions. The antimicrobial results showed that the complexes possessed promising activity against all the tested microorganisms. Keywords: mixed ligand complexes, antimicrobial, activity, amino acids, Schiff bases
